CATS!!!

Q: What is Revolution® (selamectin)?

A: Revolution is the first-ever FDA-approved, topically applied medication for cats that:

  • Kills adult fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) and prevents flea eggs from hatching.
  • Prevents heartworm disease caused by Dirofilaria immitis.
  • Treats and controls ear mites (Otodectes cynotis).
  • Treats and controls roundworms (Toxocara cati) and hookworms (Ancylostoma tubaeforme).
Q: How does Revolution® (selamectin) work?

A: Revolution enters the bloodstream through the skin. Concentrations of Revolution in the blood and tissues prevent heartworm disease and prevent and treat roundworm and hookworm infections. Revolution selectively redistributes from the blood to the skin and other tissues, where it provides protection against fleas, flea eggs, and ear mites.

Q: What are the most common side effects?

Revolution is generally well-tolerated. In studies, less than 1% of cats and dogs experienced digestive upset. Approximately 1% of cats experienced temporary hair loss at the application site. Do not use in sick, weak or underweight animals. See
U.S. Prescribing Information for more details.  Go to www.revolution4cats.com for more information.
Some Fun Flea Facts:

There are more than 2000 flea species in the world

Fleas have a substance called Resilin in their hind legs, which allows them to jump and bounce so high.

One theory of historians says that lap dogs were bred, not for their company, but to distract the fleas into biting the dog instead of its owner!

Flea fossils date back to the Lower Cretaceous period, meaning fleas have been around for about 100 million years. At that time, their neighbor might have been a Tyrannosaurus Rex or Triceratops!

Some fleas can jump 150 times their own length. That compares to a human jumping 1,000 feet. One flea broke a record with a four-foot vertical jump.

Undisturbed and without a blood meal, a flea can live more than 100 days. On average, they live two to three months.

Female fleas cannot lay eggs until after their first blood meal and begin to lay eggs within 36 to 48 hours after that meal.

The female flea can lay 2,000 eggs in her lifetime; if all 53 million dogs in the U.S. each hosted a population of 60 fleas, we'd have more than six trillion flea eggs surrounding our pets. Laid end-to-end, those eggs would stretch around the world more than 76 times!

The female flea consumes 15 times her own body weight in blood daily.

While adult fleas all suck blood from a cat, dog or other mammal, their larvae live and feed on organic debris in the host animal's environment.

Flea larvae are blind.

Warmer weather brings out the misquitos, so don't forget about heartworm preventative for both your dog or cat.  We cannot emphasize enough the importance of keeping your pet on these preventative medications, year round.  Even pets who rarely go outdoors can get heartworm disease.  All it takes is one mosquito getting into your home and your pet can become infected.

We recommend Iverhart Plus for our canine friends and Revolution for cats!

Given once monthly, Iverhart Plus protects your dog from heartworm disease as well as hookworms and roundworms.  For more information, visit www.iverhart.com.

Did you know?

  • There are 65 million dogs in the U.S.
  • Heartworm disease has been reported in all 50 states.
  • The Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) recommends year-round treatment with broad-spectrum heartworm medicine that has activity against parasites with zoonotic potential because:
  • Dogs may be exposed to and become infected with roundworms, hookworms, tapeworms and other parasites throughout the year. Consequently, stages capable of transmitting parasites can be shed into the environment, regardless of season or climate.*
  • One intestinal parasite worm can produce more than 100,000 eggs a day.
  • Over 10,000 cases of human roundworm infections are reported annually in the U.S.
  • Stomach ache, skin rashes, pneumonia and blindness may result from human infection by zoonotic internal parasites.
  • Roundworms may work their way through the body into the eye.
  • Hookworm progress can be seen under the skin as it migrates from the penetration site.
  • You can actually see tapeworms. As the rice-like segments are shed in the feces, some may remain under the dog’s tail. Owners often find these slimy, white, wiggling segments on their carpets, furniture and clothing.

Summer is just around the corner, and with summer we have some useful tips for all pet owners to share.  Summers in South Texas are brutal, and the intense heat can be very dangerous to your pet.  Here are a few things to remember.

  • Never leave pets chained outdoors in the sun for extended periods of time.  Heat stroke can occur rapidly and will always have a tragic ending.
  • Always make sure any outdoor pet has shade and fresh water available to them.
  • We all know that the temperatures in our vehicles can rise into the 100's very quickly.  Never leave your pet in a vehicle (even with windows open) for any length of time.  It only takes a matter of minutes for your pet to become severely overheated.
  • Fellows do not drive with your dog lose in the bed or your truck on hot days.  Not only will the sun bake them unmercifully, but if you ever have to stop suddenly there is a high possiblity your dog will be ejected out of your vehicle and most likely end quite tragically.
  • Never jog on 90 plus degree days with your dog, they do not sweat like we do and will quickly become overheated and cause very serious and possibly fatal results.
  • Older pets should be protected from the heat and kept inside with air conditioning.
